What an astoundingly awful book! Total self-obsessed upper class drivel, that misrepresents the French entirely as some kind of easily offended insecure food critic elite. Held on only by the desire to find one interesting recipe (I was disappointed) it seems to be mostly a documentation of the author's inflated ego. Hyperbolic representations of food, the French and the author, and little more.
This book is a retitling of Baxter's IMMOVEABLE FEAST A PARIS CHRISTMAS, published in 2008 and now available (for a limited time, it says) from . Indeed, it's one of the two items shown in the "Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed" section of this listing *and* is priced considerably lower (while supplies last) than this reissue.

Whichever you choose, though, a highly enjoyable read is your reward.
This book is light, engaging and very readable -- I devoured it in 3 hours -- and will delight anyone with interests in both food and France. However, beware of a couple of serious errors Baxter makes regarding French etiquette, a topic that features prominently in this book (indeed, there is a "10 commandments list" at the end of the book offering advise on what to do when invited to French dinner tables. I know these are errors because I have lived in France for many years, and, having a French husband, am completely integrated into French social life.

- He says that one should never, ever, bring wine or edibles to a dinner host (with the exception of chocolate) as it will insult the host. While it is true that it is erroneous to bring cheese, for example, or a dessert unless invited to do so, bringing wine is common and appreciated.

- Baxter claims that you may indeed arrive to the host's house bringing nothing but yourself. This is social suicide in France. Do this, and you certainly won't be invited back!

- In several other instances, he claims that certain gestures (such as, for example, giving someone soaps or perfumes as gifts) will make you a social pariah, as the French are very strict about the etiquette surrounding x, y, or z. I found these claims to be mostly exaggerated, perhaps for dramatic appeal.

Judging from Baxter's descriptions of his home in Paris, and the roots of the family he has married into, his milieu is that of the very rich and the very upper-class. So it may be the case that his etiquette advice applies to his own social milieu (or perhaps his French family and friends are *extremely* tightly-wound!) Most of them certainly do not apply to the middle class, or to your "average" French person, if such a thing exists. Giving a woman a gift of good perfume will delight her, not insult her! The French *won't* detest you if you invite them to Christmas dinner.

So, in short, this book is entertaining and offers many great tips on food preparation. Just don't listen to what he says about French people!
Cooking a meal for your new in-laws is probably one of the most nerve wracking events imaginable, but when those in-laws are French, and Parisians at that, then it becomes a nightmare. Even worse if, like John Baxter, you are Australian and have been raised on good plain tucker and beer.

John Baxter is a well known film critic and book lover and this is his story of how he fell in love with a French lady, married her and moved to Paris. He writes with warmth and humour, describing his new family members so perfectly that you almost feel as if you know them personally.

This is not just a memoir, it is a history of food and especially of French cookery, it's a travel story too. John is educated by his new family and neighbours - in to the ways of French life, of French cookery and of French etiquette. In turn he teaches them about spices and pork crackling, risking their sneers by doing things his way.

Cooking For Claudine will appeal to foodies, to Francophiles and to fans of memoirs, and those people will find much to discuss and debate. John Baxter is an accomplished author and this is a really enjoyable read with the added bonus of some fabulous black and white line drawings to illustrate the story.
